Public Sociology
An invested public scholar, Miller has worked for the Public Engagement Project, the Center for Research and Education on Gender and Sexuality, and Advocates for Youth on initiatives focused on using research outside of the academy to advance adolescent health and sexuality education policy. One product of this collaborative work is the article, Broadening the Evidence for Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Education in the United States, which influenced federal funding streams under the Obama administration to require that sexuality education programming address gender equity and be LGBTQ inclusive. Miller is the former director of Rape Victim Advocates’ sexual violence prevention program, which reached teens in public and private schools throughout Chicago. Building on her research, she also provides trainings for educators on gender and sexual diversity, fostering equity, and promoting inclusive school climates.
